Jacksonville Juried Show 2012

I am just tickled! I have had two of my encaustic monotypes and one cold wax painting accepted into the Jacksonville Art Center's Juried Show!

Open Studios 12th Annual Tour - Roanoke

Time again for Open Studios.

Angels of Assisi, and League of Animal Protection. 

They both do great things for the animal community, 

so I wanted to give something back to them.

New Studio, Just In Time For Open Studios, of Roanoke 2012

     Well, it will soon be going on four months since I moved into my studio. I love working there. I can spread out, work in a larger format, and leave things out if I want to. I know when I return, I can pick right  up where I left off without putting things up and then back again. That's nice!


     The studio is mainly an encaustic studio, but I will be working on larger format prints, cold wax paintings, altered books, and a plethora of 'whatever happens'. 


     This year I will be doing the Open Studios of Roanoke in my own space. For 10 years, I have been moving about from one place to another. I have loved my hosts one and all, but it will be fantastic to show where I work. After all, that IS what Open Studios is all about. For now, here are some abstract images of the new space. 

New Works

     This past week I explored some new techniques working with hot wax, better known as Encaustic. Since I have been primarily a monotype printmaker for most of my art career, I wanted to 'play' with monotypes.

      I had ordered the Encaustic printmaking plates and used those with the griddle with much success. After getting bored with the same shape and size, I rummaged through some of my old aluminum pieces I had used with the oil based  and Createx monotypes. I found a round 10" in diameter piece of the flat aluminum, and placed it on the griddle. Much to my surprise, it worked very well! I slowly fell in love with the circular plate. 

     I discovered that using the wax directly on the plate, then manipulating it with the brush worked best for me. I experimented with various papers, ranging from rice papers to traditional printmaking papers. 

     While I am new to this process, I plan on experimenting even further. 

Academy of Fine Arts National Juried Show 2012

     I just found out I had a piece selected for the Academy of Fine Arts National Juried Show 2012; Lee Sandstead is the juror for this show. The show opens on April 6th at 5 pm and closes on April 28th. 


     Also, try to make the opening of the Jacksonville Center's New Works show this coming Saturday at 6 pm in Floyd, VA at the Jacksonville center. Come meet the artists and feast your eyes on the beautiful works of regional artists. 

Fireflies

The full moon is on the horizon and I am dreaming of spring. 

The wondrous changes that take place on the Earth will soon be evident.

One of my favorite parts of having warmer weather come are the fireflies. 

Magical fireflies. 

I long to sit on the porch and watch them again. 

Peaceful Waters

Spring...spring is around the corner. 

One of the most amazing changes signaling spring is observed in the ponds around me. 

The cloudy, grey, murk slowly emerges into a colorful place ready for the frogs to re-emerge and sing, peeping their spring songs for all the hollar to hear. 

The birds come to sip the fresh spring waters. 

Color is reflected from the seeds and bulbs planted in the fall, along with the spring skies splattered with the baby green fronds of new growth shooting from the sepia bark of winter on to the waters surface. 

Not as cold,  echoing the harsh staccato music of winter, the creek water is peaceful, making it's soulful music once more as it flows over the rocks.

Life emerges again.

Winter Trees Encaustic

     Yesterday was Groundhog Day...and as we all know by now, the groundhog saw his shadow. Looks like we are in for six more week of winter according to ol' Puxatawny Phil! Now mind you, if the next six weeks are like the last six, bring it on. This winter has been mild, to say the last. While I hoped for snow, so far, there has not been any.


     Today, however, I was off for a 'snow day', a built in snow day. A creating day! Yes, a three day weekend to create! I had been hoping, for some time now, to work on a new body of work; I am now in the sketching stages for creating larger pieces of work.

     Also, I will soon be offering customizable art classes for individuals or small groups of children or adults. Private lessons are great way to develop artistic skills and foster creativity while having fun. I will tailor the classes to fit your abilities and interests. These classes can cover the most basic level skills of various art-making practices to advanced techniques. Some of the topics will include:

-Topics to choose from include, but not limited to:

• Printmaking (ex. Monotype, block printing, etc.)

• Collage (canvas, paper, altered jewelry, soldered pendants, etc.)
• Encaustic and Cold Wax techniques
• Book Arts  (book binding, accordion-style books, journal making, etc.)

Discoveries

For Christmas, the man of the house took me to my favorite art supply place, The Art Box in Lynchburg!

I examined everything, marveling at every art supply in the building! Finally, along with some papers, I decided upon these Caran d' Ache Museum 'sticks'. They are magical! I have crated two drawings so far, and I love them, just love them! 

I have also discovered cold wax. I am in love with it as well. Cold wax is so versatile. I have used it when painting, collaging, printing, and creating a cold wax painting (similar to encaustic).  I will be doing more exploring and making more discoveries, and I will keep you updated with new discoveries.

Life's Compass...Where Are You Going?

     2011, I do not know where to begin...

     Perhaps 2001 brought me the biggest message of all, so far. 

     The message of 2011, for me, was PEACE. As I became very familiar with death this year, I found PEACE in the passing of my mother, who had had cancer which occurred and re-occurred for a very long time. I knew she would finally have a pain free existence elsewhere, perhaps being reborn into a new body and life...perhaps her soul would evolve into making PEACE with herself and with others...perhaps she would come to know what happiness is. I am finding PEACE within as I have looked inside and out, pondering the treasures vs. the unpleasantries of life. 

     PEACE is sometimes a matter of changing your perspective, one way or another...

     PEACE is simply letting go. Letting go of all the tiny 'GNATS' we tend to allow to irritate us; life is full of 'GNATS'. Annoying, pesky irritations. (You know, he is this, or he does not do this, or why is it that???, what if....) Does it really matter? Is it going to make an impact? If the answer is, "NO." , then let go find PEACE. Listen to the stillness and breathe. In and out, slowly, and let it pass. When it's tough outside, be gentle with yourself, create something, watch birds, sit by flowing water, read a book, listen to music or nature. Take a friend some flowers...or homemade bread. Let PEACE be your mantra. Let PEACE keep you healthy, mentally and physically. 

     PEACE is standing up for what is right,  or making a difference for other people or beings. Stand up, without insisting on your own way. If you do have something to say, be kind. Believe in the ultimate goodness of others. Give something back of yourself, help, be a positive role model,  and teach positives. Do something amazing for some being or something (a cause, or an animal, or the Earth)...without asking for a pat on the back. It is a great feeling to stand back quietly and see the small, yet remarkable change you can make for some being or something.

     PEACE is knowing there are many great people still out there, and they are doing great things to make the world a better place. Applaud them and join them instead of being corrupted by the sensational negativity that hovers. 

     PEACE is knowing there are always solutions; oddly enough, most of those solutions are simple if we open our mind and practice re-arranging our perspective. we are stronger together, we need each others knowledge and skill, and we need to think of our differences as a spice of life. 

     I challenge you, in 2012, to find your inner PEACE and balance through amazing experiences or tough ones, in hopes that we all can make a difference. 

 PEACE within, PEACE throughout....carry PEACE where ever your compass leads. 

     To my friends  and fellow blog readers who have had challenges this year, may you find PEACE in 2012.
