For Christmas, the man of the house took me to my favorite art supply place, The Art Box in Lynchburg!

The Art Box

I examined everything, marveling at every art supply in the building! Finally, along with some papers, I decided upon these Caran d' Ache Museum 'sticks'. They are magical! I have crated two drawings so far, and I love them, just love them!

I have also discovered cold wax. I am in love with it as well. Cold wax is so versatile. I have used it when painting, collaging, printing, and creating a cold wax painting (similar to encaustic). I will be doing more exploring and making more discoveries, and I will keep you updated with new discoveries.

Life's Compass...Where Are You Going?

2011, I do not know where to begin...

Perhaps 2001 brought me the biggest message of all, so far.

The message of 2011, for me, was PEACE. As I became very familiar with death this year, I found PEACE in the passing of my mother, who had had cancer which occurred and re-occurred for a very long time. I knew she would finally have a pain free existence elsewhere, perhaps being reborn into a new body and life...perhaps her soul would evolve into making PEACE with herself and with others...perhaps she would come to know what happiness is. I am finding PEACE within as I have looked inside and out, pondering the treasures vs. the unpleasantries of life.

PEACE is sometimes a matter of changing your perspective, one way or another...

PEACE is simply letting go. Letting go of all the tiny 'GNATS' we tend to allow to irritate us; life is full of 'GNATS'. Annoying, pesky irritations. (You know, he is this, or he does not do this, or why is it that???, what if....) Does it really matter? Is it going to make an impact? If the answer is, "NO." , then let go find PEACE. Listen to the stillness and breathe. In and out, slowly, and let it pass. When it's tough outside, be gentle with yourself, create something, watch birds, sit by flowing water, read a book, listen to music or nature. Take a friend some flowers...or homemade bread. Let PEACE be your mantra. Let PEACE keep you healthy, mentally and physically.

PEACE is standing up for what is right, or making a difference for other people or beings. Stand up, without insisting on your own way. If you do have something to say, be kind. Believe in the ultimate goodness of others. Give something back of yourself, help, be a positive role model, and teach positives. Do something amazing for some being or something (a cause, or an animal, or the Earth)...without asking for a pat on the back. It is a great feeling to stand back quietly and see the small, yet remarkable change you can make for some being or something.

PEACE is knowing there are many great people still out there, and they are doing great things to make the world a better place. Applaud them and join them instead of being corrupted by the sensational negativity that hovers.

PEACE is knowing there are always solutions; oddly enough, most of those solutions are simple if we open our mind and practice re-arranging our perspective. we are stronger together, we need each others knowledge and skill, and we need to think of our differences as a spice of life.

I challenge you, in 2012, to find your inner PEACE and balance through amazing experiences or tough ones, in hopes that we all can make a difference.

PEACE within, PEACE throughout....carry PEACE where ever your compass leads.

Lately, I have been getting interested in old walls.

This one held a particular interest for me.

No special reason, other than it was etched with a painted history.

The end results was this photographic abstract. The more I look, the more I wondered about the pits, scratched etchings from objects moving in and out, painting, and just existing throughout the years.If the walls could talk, what would they say?

Creating Heals....

As I ease into each new day, typically at 5:30 am, I reach for my coveted coffee and begin searching and posting for interesting facts and other information to share with my students. I gradually deepened my searches and interests, and began sharing my findings on facebook each morning as I sip that first cup of coffee.

My interest started as reading a quote a day, but then went on to include artist and historical birthdays and facts. One birthday I mentioned in todays post was that of Joseph Conrad, author of Heart of Darkness. While Conrad does not hold a particular fascination for me, I was merely attracted to one of his quotes (The quote is the one mentioned above.) I then read a little of Conrad's biography since I wanted to share his birthday this morning on fb.
By the age of 12, both his parents had died of tuberculosis. Conrad's father was a poet and a translator; I assumed that at an early age, Conrad developed creative insight and interest. Conrad joined the Merchant Marine and travelled the world. One morning in particular, he just began writing...describing the sunlight on the "roofs and windows." Despite his loss, he never forgot beauty. ( He wrote, "It was an autumn day ... with fiery points and flashes of red sunlight on the roofs and windows opposite, while the trees of the square with all their leaves gone were like tracings of an Indian ink on a sheet of tissue paper.")

As I read about Conrad this morning, I was reminded of several things. For one, I was reminded of the thankfulness I had that my mother read to me as a child. The stories were fantastic stirrings of the imagination and took me to places that were utterly delightful. I can still remember those stories to this day. Once, I translated one of the fables into my first successful piece of art...I drew what I imagined as it was read to me. I was appreciative of the travels and local color my father exposed me to. He pointed out the tiniest of details, such as the colors reflected in an old piece of brown glass we dug up in our yard. These events began shaping the foundations of who I am today.

I began pondering how art, whether it be writing, music, dance, or the visual arts, appear to be developed from some sort of initial experience. As I looked back at past postings, at the 'creatives' I have had the pleasure to connect with, and my own experiences, I found a renewed interest on how creativity and experience, especially painful ones, are so closely linked.

The visual arts, for me, have been a healing resource. As I have looked around, listened, and read, I noted in my readings and artist interviews that several 'creatives' I admire, have had an experience that has shaped them to respond to their lives in an esthetically moving way. I am more convinced now, more than ever, that the creative process is one of those inherent qualities that we all need to heal. I think more so that it is the drive to create the world to survive life and the experiences we endure that make our art and life more compelling.
As usual, tomorrow I will awaken and post about another amazing creative, or two. As I see it, the infinite exposures of our lives, and the glimpses looking into the lives of other creatives only fuels the energy and validates that art, in any form heals, and convinces us to really see.

Time Flies...Cold Wax Collage

I really do not know where time goes. That is one thing I am going to put on my wish list...time.

I have been asked to give time to the workshop for the League of Roanoke artists next October! I am excited about this. My focus will be on cold wax techniques, which I am still experimenting with; I have only brushed the surface of what this medium can do, and what I will do with it.

This is art festival where artists show and sell their creations on the grounds of Tuggles Gap Restaurant & Motel in beautiful Floyd County.

Located at the intersection of Rt. 8 and Milepost 165.2 of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and held during peak autumn color, Art on the Parkway connects "leaf peepers" and art patrons with area artists and musicians. Last year, several hundred people came to see and buy art, making it a very successful event for artist vendors. We anticipate even larger crowds for 2011.

Fall Soldered Pendant Workshop

Reflecting....

This evening I began to go through a large stack of papers placed in my 'art closet' on a shelf. I thought I'd save this for that and that for this, and so on. Looking at some of these tid-bits again, some left me shaking my head (what was that all about?), and some I wondered why I did not put them in a better place for keeping...It felt good to finally have a new tid-bit space so I can now start all over again in that process...well, you know how artists are, right?
One of the things I wanted to share was this drawing I did, perhaps it was my first year in college, or maybe my last year in high school. I wish I had titled it and dated it. It was intriguing because it closely resembles some of my most recent works, the ink drawings. Looking back, I can now see how my personal stye has developed over the years. Now, I contemplate in which direction I will move next.

I do know that I will be framing this tid-bit of my past, and perhaps calling it, 'My Closet Door'.

I had planned to create multiple color prints for the IPE, but I took advantage of a day with low humidity to begin a project in the back yard. I had designed a walkway and plan for a wall so folks could walk around the house instead of going up the hill and down the maze to the back sitting area.

The area I am re-landscaping is the area to the left of the studio door. Eventually, it will be all pea sized river rock and will become a walkway to the other side of the house....which is another project developing in my head.

For now, I am posting the before photo. I will post a follow up as soon as I get things halfway in place. Right now, I am just moving lots and lots of dirt!

The prints will happen later in the week.

Collograph Printmaking- Silly Crow Tricks

It is time again to send submissions off to the International Print Exchange. I did this last year for the first time and I have to say, it was a grand experience! There were so many printmakers from all over the world that participated in sharing their talent. Proudly, I received several prints from just a few of these printmakers, in exchange. Of course, if there are prints that you like, you can buy them from Green Door Printmaking Studio. All proceeds go to the studio for classes.

The image I chose to work with was one from one of my collaged pins that I did back last year. Here is my completed plate. I started out by drawing the image and carving a lino-cut. I decided I was not pleased, so I tried the same image as a collograph. (A collograph, is a collaged plate, then inked and printed.)

I am please with the collograph...tomorrow, I will print.

Updates on shows and galleries!

   Late winter and spring, I have had time to work in the studio at long last. New works have been matted and framed and are now ready to show. This year I am still creating ink drawings on recycled papers, and due to popular requests, making collaged pendants and pins.

   Here are the shows:

***47th Annual Bath County Art Show Opens Saturday July 16, closes July 24 @ 5pm. Valley Elementary School,WARM SPRINGS, VA -
   The 47th Annual Bath County Art Show opens on Saturday July 16. This year organizers are expecting to have over 600 entries. Cathy Singleton is a board member for the Bath County Arts Association, which sponsors the show.
   "This year our judge is Dr. Edward Keel who is a curator at the Kreeger Museum in Washington D.C." she says. "We're very excited to have him judge our show, and we do award over $8000.00 in prizes to the artists that enter."
   Entries for the show come from around the region including West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Last year 259 artists participated. The art show is a fundraiser for the Bath County Arts Association. All of the artwork at the show is for sale and the Arts Association receives a commission.
   The Bath County Art Show is Saturday July 16 through Sunday July 24 at Valley Elementary School in Hot Springs. It's open from 1 to 5 daily and admission is free.

I am truly excited about the creation of Southwest Virginia Artists. The blog is for local and regional artisans, musicians, and writers, etc.

I am meeting new artists, learning about techniques, and learning about the rich talent in the state of Virginia. This site features, fine art, fine craft, photography, musicians, writers, actors, and more all in one place! There are listings for galleries, classes, and other Southwest Virginia happenings. I refer to it as an 'Art Center' on the net!

This site is a fantastic place to get your art out into the wide open and reach so many! I would like to encourage artists to visit the site and contact me if you are interested in being part of the site, or would like more information.

Well, (knock on wood) I have re-arranged my house and now I am working on the studio. This is a sure sign something creative is going to happen.

Here is an extremely random mixed media image I created today. I call this abstract, "Wild Goat." I am sure there won't be another, it won't be a series, it just 'happened.'

Hate to say it, but I decided not to do the Side Walk Art Show. After 30 years, the decision was hard, but now I am actually glad I will be a spectator for a change.

New works are on the way. I have had a few time constraints over the past few months and I will soon be at a point where I can create again. I am full of energy.

If there is a work you are interested in, or a commission, I will be glad to meet people at my studio, upon appointment (please call or email). My works can be seen in several galleries in and around Roanoke, please look for me there. The listings are posted on this site.

A juried exhibition of regional art – the grand prize is a solo show in Smoyer Gallery during the 2011-12 exhibition season. Even more impressive is that the submissions will be jurored by one of the most influential curators in America.

Carter Foster, a native of Atlanta, Ga., is currently curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He has published and lectured extensively on contemporary and old master drawings; he has also served as curator and co-chair of the department of Prints and Drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Foster recently co-curated a major exhibition on American artist Roni Horn and is now planning a long-term research project on Edward Hopper’s drawings.

The gallery is open 1-4 p.m. every day including weekends.

I completed and framed yet another oil and wax painting.

I used the Gamblin cold wax and Rembrandt oils on this piece.

They 'married' nicely.

The textural effects are so interesting!

I found two more paintings that my mother has painted!

This tempera painting was done by mum when she was in her teens. It reminds me of an O'Keefe...I found it in an old sketchbook and just recently had it matted and framed. I thought this was ironic as I had always loved Georgia O'Keefe and mum did not know who she was when she painted this.

Mum took art lessons way up on Sheep Mountain from an artist by the name of George Solonevich. He and his wife Inga were very gracious and offered lessons in their mountain 'school'. This style differs from her original style, which I liked so much better. Many years later, ionically, I never took art lessons from George, but I rented a cabin (Mystila) from him in the 70's.

I am hoping that, while she can, she will get back into the charcoal and draw.

I have been just playing. No two results, mediums, nor thoughts have been the same. I have discovered that the Gamblin cold wax is firmer, thus winning my complete attention for finishing these collages.

As a result of playing, I have found tar gel as a grand acrylic medium, as well as the fiber paste. I am going to experiment further with the cold wax, making four panels of an abstract later today. I will post the results later.

Saturday Workshop

Today there was an exciting workshop demonstrated by Suzanna Fields at Hollins University. She introduced us to all the various Golden mediums, acrylics, and inks. Many folks brought their own interesting items to 'play' with. Watching the inks, mediums, and acrylics flow was magical!

Days like this are carefree and spontaneous, something we often forget to do, in life and in art. Great comrade and creative spirit was everywhere.

My mother loved painting and drawing, as did her father; I remember many times when she was painting and drawing when I was young. (My brother and I were fascinated by this and she encouraged us to explore the arts and music.) She did several tempera paintings and oils, yet she preferred charcoal drawing. Unfortunately, most of her drawings and paintings are gone (given away or misplaced).

My brother was cleaning out boxes of things in his attic and "WALLA!", found the cat charcoal drawing she was the most proud of. I was sitting with her the other night when he walked in the door with it. It made us so happy to see the expression on her face.

The photo does not do it justice, but here it is. What a treasure!

I am hoping to sort through my hiding places to see what I can find...I know I have some more of her work someplace! I will post them as I find them.

Against the Wind

This early winter morning I woke, made the morning coffee as usual. The warm rising sun peered over the hill and through the window to where I sat sipping my fresh brew. The turbulent wind was howling bringing the temperature down to about 26 degrees here in the hollow. I sat amazed as the birds were able to fly against the wind, with the wind and coast to their destinations. They are amazing....

New Works- Oil and Cold Wax

Last summer I began experimenting with Encaustics, painting with melted wax and pigments. I have tried it a dew times since, and I adore the sensual feeling of the medium, as well as the numerous ways to work with the medium. It is amazingly forgiving to work with!

Time constraints have been limiting my ability to work with the Encaustics, so after a little research, I ordered a medium called 'cold wax'. Dorland's and Gamblin both make it. Last weekend, I tried the Dorland's first. I mixed it with various amounts of cold wax, experimenting to see how it best worked for me.

Beginning with the wax, oils, and q-tips to paint with, I layered on dots of color, painted broad strokes of paint, and used my fingers to blend color straight on the substrate (which, like Encaustic, has to be sturdy). while I am in the stages of experimenting with this medium, I was pleased with as few of the pieces, so far. There are so many ways to handle the medium, and I plan to explore them all. I plan on brayering, laminating, stamping, carving, and drawing into the cold wax layers to see what happens with each tool.

For now, the cold wax is similar to Encaustic, but I interpret it a tad differently than the typical hot wax mediums. Now, I am just hoping for time to further my experiments. Any ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated!

A co-worker, petite and cute, goes bear hunting in Craig county on her free weekends with her boyfriend. She enjoys it so much and just loves the hunting dogs. These are the first two of the dogs she commissioned me to paint for her boyfriends birthday. I have to say, I really enjoyed doing something different, and something in oil.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Marking the end of summer days, I always make side trip onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. I often stop at an overlook, sketch, or paint, or just meditate. Each year I reflect on those meditative experiences and create works of art reflecting those moments.

With this image, I was particularly drawn to the way the land creates flowing forms across the Earth; eyes darting in and out of plowed fields, woodlands, and over mountains taking me into the deep core of nature.

This in turn reminds me of a poem by Walt Whitman;

A song of the rolling earth, and of words according,

Were you thinking that those were the words,

those upright lines? those curves, angles, dots?

No, those are not the words, the substantial words are

in the ground and sea,

They are in the air, they are in you.

All spring and summer, I have enjoyed gardening. My quest was to re-plant where I had put in a rock wall in the back yard and to add to the two new beds I created. I am in the process of photographing some of the flowers.

I got involved with Green Door 's International Print Exchange. I like challenges and accept quite a few of them ranging from jewelry making, collage, and now printmaking.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the simplicity of the wood block prints.

Wood block printing can be quite involved, especially when you get into layers and different colors, etc. For this project I created just a simple black and white image of 'Jazz' my now 14 year old cat who loves the garden.

This piece is called, Resemblance of Flowers.

I thought this image was appropriate to post because this morning, upon waking and stepping outside for my morning coffee, I noticed the tall phlox and cone flowers were gone. ....

There is a very hungry doe that lives nearby. (It makes me sad to she her all skin and bones.) Apparently, she decided to come in a little closer last night and have a midnight snack...I hope the pruned flowers will come back.....I also hope she finds other foliage in the woods to feed on...

Sidewalk art show winners announced

The show featured artists from all over the country, but Virginia had a strong representation.

The Taubman Museum of Art announced the winners of the 52nd annual Sidewalk Art Show on Saturday.

Some 160 artists displayed their wares outside of the museum, giving them the chance to meet and talk with patrons. The show featured artists from all over the country, though there was a strong representation of Virginia artists.

Gary Dodson of Arrington took home Best in Show, with Kurt Kindermann of Bedford and John Wilson of Roanoke receiving second and third prizes, respectively.

Memorial awards were given to Jamie Nervo of Boones Mill, John Wilson of Roanoke, Vera Dickerson of Troutville and Robert Flowers of Summerfield, N.C.

Awards for various categories were given to a number of artists. Gina Louthian-Stanley of Roanoke received the drawing/original printmaking award, Brian Sykes of Charlotte, N.C., received the fine craft award, David Eakin of Lynchburg received the mixed media award, Nancy Stark of Roanoke received the painting award, Susan Bidwell of Roanoke received the photography award, Robin and Daniel Cater of Sparta, N.C., received the sculpture award and Vonnie Whitworth of Virginia Beach received the watercolor award.
